The word “wise” is used loosely these days to describe everything from celebrities on YouTube to futuristic TVs that know what you want to watch before you do. However, what does it truly mean to be wise? What are the tell-tale characteristics of an individual whose knowledge and abilities surpass the ordinary, such that he or she becomes a beacon to others searching and stumbling in the dark?

According to the Overseer of God’s Remnant Assembly Akintayo Emmanuel, we can spot, celebrate and cherish the truly wise among us by relying on the clear instructions and insights conveyed by four Biblical passages: James 3:13, Proverbs 3:5–6, Proverbs 12:15, and Luke 6:38.

James 3:13: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

According to Dr. Akintayo Emmanuel, “The true test and expression of our wisdom is not just in what we think, but also in how we act — especially during difficult and challenging events. At the same time, we must always be anchored in humility, and never become arrogant or self-important. Our God given wisdom should inspire and encourage others, not intimidate or diminish them. This godly wisdom can only manifest if we subscribe to developing a personal relationship with God.

Commented Dr. Akintayo Emmanuel, whose organization God’s Remnant Assembly operates a telephone prayer line for those who cannot attend in-person services in due to social distancing measures: “A truly wise person puts their full faith in God, and surrender’s to His will and instruction, knowing that they will always head in the right direction.”

Proverbs 12:15: “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

“The truly wise are always willing and eager to listen to the advice of others, and do not hesitate to change their attitudes or actions if presented with new and better information. Conversely, the foolish are slaves to their own impulses, and refuse to accept the counsel of others, even when doing so would clearly be to their advantage.”

Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Commented Dr. Akintayo Emmanuel, who is a productive essayist, with a heavenly vision and commission to raise unto our God a mighty army of overcomers, who will be just like Jesus Christ in this age and yonder: “Those who share their God given wisdom with others are never at risk of exhausting their abilities and gifts. On the contrary, by sharing they assure themselves of enhancing in wisdom. It is a virtuous cycle.”
